This is Andhra Style Chakarapongali / Sweet Pongal recipe where chana dal is used instead of moong dal. This chakarapongali preparation is completely different from Tamil Nadu sakkarai pongal. In Tamil nadu style sweet pongal recipe, moong dal and jaggery is used. To experience a variation in the taste, chana dal and sugar, are used in this recipe. Traditionally, this sweet pongal is prepared by cooking rice and dal in milk in a pot. But to save time, pressure cooker is used in the dish preparation.

1 Cup of Sona Masoori Raw Rice
3 Tbsp of Moong Dal
1 and 1/2 Cup of Indian Sugar
6 Tbsp of Ghee
4 Tbsp of Dry Coconut powder
Few Cashew Nuts
Few raisins
1/2 Tsp of Cardamom Powder
1/2 Cup of Milk
2 Cups of Water (Not included)
Pinch of Saffron

Procedure To Prepare Chakarapongali Recipe / Sweet pongal
Wash the raw rice and keep aside. Heat 2 tsp of ghee in a cooker. Roast the moong dal until they turn into a golden colour with a nice smell.
Now add 2 cups of water and a pinch of salt for taste to the washed rice. Mix well and cook until 2 to 3 whistles in low flame. Don't worry, dal won't become mushy. Dal should be visible in the mashed rice.
Mash it well and add sugar, milk, cardamom powder, dry coconut powder. Mix well and boil in low flame for 5 minutes. Make sure the bottom is not burnt. Mix whenever needed. Consistency should not be too thick.
Remove when the mix is semi solid and keep aside. Roast the chopped nuts and dry grapes in the remaining 2 and half tbsp of ghee. Roast till raisens puff up and cashew nuts turn into golden colour and then add to the sweet pongal. Mix the sweet well.
If the pongal is too thick, add some boiled milk and bring to the desired consistency. You can reheat this sweet pongal by just adding little water or milk and serve it after the pooja. It tastes fresh and delicious when served hot. Andhra style chakarapongali is ready to be served and enjoyed!
Add Saffron on top and server it.
Recipe Note
For different taste and variations, You can add chana dal instead of moong dal.
To save time here you use pressure cooker to cook the rice and dal but you can cook the rice and dal in a pot adding milk.
